Plant based and pregnant
This blog is a short "interview" with a fellow plant based mama whom I had the pleasure to meet a few months ago. We connected and have stayed in touch ever since! I think you'll enjoy :-)
Tell us about yourself: Hi guys, my name is Kailyn. I am a happy, southern 22 year old mama born and raised in Alabama but currently residing in Indy. I am blessed with two girls, one toddler (2) and another on the way! My fiance' dibs in and out of plant based however he pleases, but we have no meat in our house!
1) When did you decide to go plant based and tell us why?
I decided a plant based lifestyle was best for me in November 2017. I have many friends that are on a plant based diet and they would always talk about how their diet changed them, not only physically but emotionally. I wanted to see what the hype was about. I was also in my first trimester of pregnancy and it honestly helped me transition. I was able to cut meat out cold turkey because it just looked so gross to me. Of course, I already had food aversions and the smell, sight, and texture of meat just turned me off completely.
2) Have you felt any different with this pregnancy than your previous since being on a plant based diet?
I would say yes and no. I feel like my pregnancy symptoms haven't subsided at all. My hormones are still wacky! LOL But when I am in a good mood, my highs are super high. I feel more positive, more energized and more determined to get things done I also had morning sickness during my first few months (which was my first time experiencing this, and it was tragic) However, I have noticed that I've gained less weight than with my previous. Also, my skin has been really clear and glowing this pregnancy.
3) Have you experienced cravings? If so, what is it that you crave the most?
Oh yes! I've craved everything, including meat, haha! During the start of my plant based diet all I wanted to eat was fruit. Now, I'm in my third trimester and I'm back to the fruit cravings. I've been whipping up huge bowls of fruit salad for me to eat throughout the week and I usually will have a smoothie (strawberry banana has been my current favorite)
4) What do you want others to know about having a plant based pregnancy?
With the right mindset, anything is possible! I like to think of this as a journey because it takes a lot of self discipline and control. As a woman I can definitely say I am shocked (but really excited about how little I've gained in weight but my baby is measuring perfect. I can't wait to hit the gym and see how fast my body bounces back to normal "new normal", lol! This is my first pregnancy with a plant based diet and I wouldn't have it any other way!
5) What is your favorite meal or thing to cook?
Being pregnant will definitely kick you into gear to cook or try new things!
Breakfast: strawberry and banana smoothie, oatmeal, fruit
Lunch or Dinner: more fruit, stir fry, or steamed veggies over rice
This meal was so yummy! Fried cauliflower, salad and baked potato with homemade sour cream!
6) Where can we find you on social media?
I've just started my own business venture, Dania Media, where I design and/or manage various social media accounts and websites. I also specialize in creating custom graphics like logos, flyers, menus etc.
